Origins of the Button-Down Shirt

17 Jan, 2019 | Lee-Anne Harris
The narrative of the button-down shirt began during the latter parts of the 19th century, when an American visiting England noticed that British polo players wore shirts with fastened collars to stop them flapping around during play. Impressed by such innovation, he took the idea back to his grandfather’s company and in 1896 it was introduced to American shores where it become an unmistakable staple in men’s wardrobes across the country. Today, the button-down shirt is as popular as ever. Versatile and effortlessly stylish, it perfectly treads the line between formal and casual – offering a timeless option for a wide range of occasions.

How to Wear the Button-Down Shirt

Whether you’re attending a wedding or heading to work, the button-down shirt will ensure you always look the part. To get you started, we’ve listed three outfit ideas below: Adopt the classic Ivy League look by the rolling the sleeves of your shirt and teaming it with chinos and penny loafers or brogues. During particularly warm months, bring out the shorts and swap the shoes for smart trainers. For a fine formal ensemble, we suggest pairing your shirt with a tailored navy suit and brown shoes – adding a silk tie when the occasions requires it. An excellent option for smart-casual outfits, the button-down shirt works well underneath a knitted jumper. To complete the look, try yours with corduroy trousers and leather Chelsea boots.
