How to Layer in Winter

20 Nov, 2017 | Savile Row
Whether you like it or not, winter is coming, and with temperatures dropping by the day, staying warm has become priority number one. However, whilst putting on every jumper you own might seem like a good idea, it isn’t your only option – and definitely not your best. Instead, follow our guide on how to layer in winter and you’re sure to look as great as you feel.

The Basics

Before we get ahead of ourselves, it is important we help you understand the basics. To start, always layer from thin to thick. Not only does this make it easier for you to shed or add pieces as you see fit – in effect putting you in control of your body temperature – but it also makes your ensemble more aesthetically pleasing. Secondly, try to vary the texture and fabric each time you add a garment to your outfit. Whilst this isn’t vital, it is certainly encouraged as it gives off a sense of depth that can’t be created with clothes made of the same material. Lastly, no matter how insignificant you think a layer is, make sure it fits in with the rest of your look. You really don’t want to be that guy who can’t take off his jumper because his shirt doesn’t look right with his trousers.

Keep it Simple

Despite what you may have heard, winter layering isn’t a competition – so resist going overboard and limit yourself to three good garments: a shirt, jumper and jacket. Sure, it’s OK to add more, but by sticking to a few key pieces you can ensure nothing goes wrong. For inspiration, take a look at our fail-safe outfit suggestion: mens-suits

Finishing Touches

As with any stylish ensemble, accessories play a big part in creating a layered look you can be proud of. From cashmere scarves to colourful socks, these warming finishing touches will not only add character to your look, but give you that one last layer to help protect you from the winter chill. Final Word

With the above information now on your side, dressing for winter should be a breeze. However, if you’re still unsure how to layer successfully, we’ve summarised the main things to remember below:
  • Always layer from thin to thick.
  • If in doubt, stick to three good garments.
  • Make the most of accessories.
  • Vary textures and fabrics.
  • Make sure every layer matches.
