Are Cufflinks Old-Fashioned?

26 Sep, 2018 | Savile Row
So, let's get straight to it. Are cufflinks old-fashioned? As a trusted retailer with 80 years’ experience, we can categorically tell you that they've never fallen out of favour. Just like a button-down shirt or navy suit, they're timeless and deserve to take pride of place in every gentleman’s accessory collection.

What Are Cufflinks?

Small decorative items, cufflinks are worn on formal shirts with a double cuff – securing the sleeve ends together and making sure that the cuffs fit snug around the wrists. Their origin can be traced back to the beginning of the sixteenth century, however it wasn’t until the end of the 18th century that they become popular.

Why Should You Wear Cufflinks?

Whilst they play a functional role in menswear, they should also be looked upon as a valuable styling tool. When it comes to dressing with panache, the smallest of details can make a big difference – and a set of cufflinks will help set you apart from the crowds.

When Can You Wear Cufflinks?

Suitable for any formal events, they are ideal for those wishing to express their individuality and personal style. Whether you’re attending a wedding or important business meeting, they'll help you add the perfect finishing touch.

They should be worn with formal dress shirts – in particular those you would wear to the office or a black tie event. As a rule of thumb, if your shirt has double cuffs, it needs a pair.

How to Put on Cufflinks

Although there are many types available, the most common are equipped with a T-bar fitting. To ensure you put yours on correctly, simply follow these three easy steps:
  • Fold up your shirt cuff so that the two holes meet at the bottom.
  • Place them through the two adjoining holes.
  • Twist the bar at the bottom so it stays secure.
