CLOTHING
DO
Always read the care label before washing and organise your laundry into groups with similar care instructions/colours
DON’T
Use too much detergent or detergents that contain bleach
Do not tumble dry unless indicated on the care label
Do not iron prints, trims or embellishments. If need be, iron on reverse or use a clean tea towel between the iron and garment
Do not leave garments with white and contrast coloured panels soaking for prolonged periods
Do not wash a garment if it says Dry Clean only
SUITS
DO
Use a wishbone shaped hanger after wear
Invest in a clothes brush and brush your suit after wear; this will stop dirt settling into the fabric
Use a suit carrier for transporting suits and a cloth suit cover for when it is in the wardrobe
DON’T
Wear the same suit day after day – a suit needs 24 hours to air and breathe
Put the suit back in the closet straight after wear
Hang it in a well-ventilated area so any moisture in the wool dissipates and the fibres spring back into shape
FOOTWEAR
DO
Invest in shoe trees – they allow recently worn shoes to contract and dry out to their ideal shape
Visit a cobbler when shoes need to be resoled.
Polish your shoes – the little time you spend cleaning and polishing will be repaid by the extended lifespan
DON’T
Put wet shoes near direct heat or a radiator – they may dry too quickly and cause the leather to crack. Instead push newspaper into the shoe and let it dry naturally
Leave salt stains (from road gritting) on your shoes. Instead, remove them with a little vinegar and water
